A complete refurbishment of a historic garden and park full of protected veteran trees that provide the setting to a grade II* former rectory.
The design involved the careful introduction of contemporary structures and features into this sensitive landscape, such as a serpentine lake within the Wild Garden, an indoor swimming pool and greenhouses within the walled garden, and a new drive, cricket field and pavilion in the park. It also involved extensive replanting of beds and borders, with formal and ‘wild’ areas, a new productive kitchen garden and the choosing and siting of sculpture, furniture and garden buildings – all responding seamlessly to the site’s historic development over three centuries and its very individual sense of place.
P+W were involved in the project from the start, firstly by researching the site’s history and developing the design concept with client and architect, helping to gain planning approvals, and then following through with the detailed design work and on-site supervision.
