PEOPLE will get the chance to explore undiscovered areas of Cirencester this September, as the town gets involved with National Heritage Open Day.

Areas in town, such as the old Querns House at Cirencester Hospital, the high rooftop of St James’ Place and the canal walk behind the Cotswold District Council offices, can be explored thoroughly during the open weekend in September.

Organiser Martin Portus has invited members of the public to delve into their past and bring in any old photos or memorabilia from sites in Cirencester.

“As Querns House used to be a maternity hospital, it would be great to see some pictures people took while they were there,” he said. “So instead of people just looking around the building, we’ll have some actual anecdotes for them to see.

“I’m trying to collect little bits of history of all the town’s buildings which will be open during the heritage open days. Even if you think it isn’t that interesting, it will be to some people.”

Anyone with photos or stories can visit Martin so he can scan the images and write down the information in time for the big event.

National Heritage Open Day takes place in towns all across the UK from September 11-14. Pop into Portus and Whitton Landscape Architects at 58 Ashcroft Road in Cirencester to talk to Martin about getting involved or sharing photos of the town’s history.
